How to Draw an Angry Bird, "Red Bird"

Updated on August 17, 2017

The Red Birds body shape.

In this hub I am going to give you all the information to be able to draw a Red Angry Bird, just like the ones you see in the popular game, Angry Birds.

The Red Angry Bird has a slight oval shape to it and can be achieved by drawing two circles over the top of each other, side by side, which can be seen in the images below. First of all start out with a circle, this can be drawn with a dinner plate or any object that is circular, and it fits nicely on your paper. I don't advise you to to draw these free hand if they are going to be big because circles are not easy to draw when you are trying to draw them big.

Tools to draw your Angry Bird.

I advise using a soft graphite pencil to draw your basic out lines, the pencil I use most often is a B grade pencil, which is a 3B. You will also need some paper to do your drawing onto and some marker pens or felt tipped pens. You can use paint if you want to but it will be more difficult with paint. It is of course completely up to you what you use but I find marker pens the best because they are easy and quick to use. You will also need an eraser to remove any pencil marks you don't what. So as to make your bird drawing more convincing and not see your construction lines easily. When drawing with your pencil do not press too hard as this will make your lines more difficult to remove later and might spoil your finished drawing.

Two circles side by side.

First draw two circles side by side like the example above to create an oval shape for your Red Angry Birds body. This will help you get it the right size and shape that you need to make your bird convincing.

Remove the construction lines.

Using your eraser you can remove the construction lines you made to make your oval shaped body for the Angry Bird. This is best done now because these lines if left, can confuse your eye into making the wrong judgments about where things should go in relation to each other.

Drawing the Red Birds plumage.

The first thing to draw in this drawing of the Red Angry Bird is the plumage on the birds head. This can be done by finding the center vertical line within the oval shaped body area we have just drawn. I do not draw these lines in when doing this but you can if you feel the need to. You should also identify the horizontal line going the other way from side to side. If you wanted to you could just mark these out with a few small dots on the paper to help you. When you have found your center line it will make it more easy to identify where the other lines go in relation to these center lines. If you look to the right hand side of the center line you can see the distance where the plumage starts on the right and then make a small mark or a dot where you think it should go. On the left hand side you can measure where it will go by multiplying that same distance by 3 because it is about 3 times father. You will also notice that the farthest right hand side of the plumage is about the same distance out from the center line, as the dot you will have just made on the other side. From the top of the birds head to the top of the plumage is about one quarter of the height of the oval shape you have just drawn. The lower section of the plumage is about half way when looking from side to side on the horizontal plane. These elements and marks should help you find out the basic dimensions to enable you to draw the rest of the plumage more accurately.

The bottom section.

The birds belly area is a curved line that is about one third of the distance to the top of the drawing where the plumage has been drawn. It is about central to the overall shape of the the birds body area.

Getting the beak in place.

The outer most tip of the beak is almost touching the outer edge of the birds body shape and just below the top line of the curved line that has just been shown as the birds body. You can mark that out with a small dot at the opposite end you can do the same. From the central vertical line this mark is just a little way to the left where yo can make another small dot. Then you can draw this slightly curved line by drawing from one dot to the other. The top part of the beak is a triangle shape and the tip can be found lining up with the vertical plane just a little below the horizontal plane. Above where base of the triangle shape has just been drawn and crosses the line of the birds belly. Place a little dot there and draw the lines needed to represent the top section of the birds beak.

The bottom section is another triangle shape up side down from the top section. It can be aligned with the tip of the top section but slightly to the right and on the left it lines up where the curved line of the birds belly where it touches the outer line of the body on the horizontal plane. If you place a dot here it will help you to draw those lines more accurately.

Where do the eyes go?

First notice that the nearest eye to the center is slightly bigger than the other one this is done like this to help trick the brain into believing that the birds head is slightly turned to the side. The eye on the right nearest the center, lines up horizontally about half way down the beak area and vertically with the center. The center of both eyes line up with the tip of the top triangle and is about the distance of the top beak section top to bottom in height to the horizontal plane. Again this is made more easy if you place dots in these areas to mark out where you are going to draw your lines. The first eye nearest the center line can be used to mark out the smaller eye on the left.

The pupils.

The pupil in the eye closest the the center line is right in the center of the eye shape where as the other pupil is closed to the inner edge of the eye ball shape. Again let me just remind that it helps to a make little dots as marks to draw your lines to.

Eyebrows.

The eyebrow shapes are just two rectangle blocks in a slight vee shape slanted into the center between the two eyes the outer portions of these rectangle shapes are a little bit larger than the inside dimensions. The end of the eyebrow closest to the outer edge of the birds body is the easiest one to identify, the dimensions the bottom tip, lines up with the top section of the eyeball area closest to it and is about the distance of the pupil to the outer edge of the same eye to the top corner section of the eyebrow rectangle shape. The other one on the opposite side is directly along the horizontal plane and lines up directly with the area at the top of the head where the plumage meets the outer edge of the oval body shape.

Now the Bird is looking very messy.

By adding the oval shapes down the side of the birds body it has made the bird very messy and so it is time to clean up by removing unwanted line.

The tail.

The tail lines up almost along the horizontal plane of the birds oval body shape on the right had side of this shape. This is about the width of the whole eye ball nearest the center of the overall oval body shape. It can be lined up from the central horizontal plane that runs through the oval body shape of the bird, the mark above is the beginning of the top section of the tail which is again a rectangle shape on the outer edge and the same for the bottom one, these are about the width of a pupil from the center horizontal plane. The rest of these marks can be established looking along the same horizontal plane to find out where they they go in relation to other elements you have already drawn.

Cleaning up your drawing.

Now it time to remove all the lines that you don't need, where the oval shapes go into the eyes, where the eyes go into the beak area, where the belly area goes into the beak area and the top of the head where the plumage joins onto the body.

Oval shaped marks.

These can be seen down the side of the body and to the outer edge of the both eyes on the finished bird drawing, they are represented as darker red areas like patterns in the birds plumage. They can be lined up both horizontally and vertically with the use of these planes of sight by looking and measuring them in relation to the belly area on the horizontal plane as well as the vertical plane in the same area, the central one by the eye can be also lined up with the eye it overlaps into.

Outline.

Finally go over the outlines with a marker pen in black, filling in the eyebrows, tail and pupils before filling in the colors, this will help because if you cross the lines the colors overlapping into the black will not show.

The above image could be printed out or traced and just drawn over by children if you wanted something for children to do instantly with a little less work on your part.

The finished Red Angry Bird example to aim for.

This above is my finished image of the Red Angry Bird it was made on a PC with GIMP photo editing software, Graphic Image Manipulation Program.

Below is a quick example done with marker pens which could be improved upon if I took my time to do the drawing and I am sure you could do just as well as me.
